The first project of Sahara For Life Trust; Sughra Shafi Medical
Complex; a State of the art 200 bed General Hospital situated 120 kms away from
Lahore is catering for the needs of 40 million population of the catchment area.
The civil work, procurement of equipment, hiring of qualified professional staff
was completed in the first half of year 2003. The outpatient department of the
hospital was inaugurated on 28th July 2003 and the inpatient section started
functioning in year 2004. The hospital was formally inaugurated in April 2007 by
the then President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The hospital has so far treated more than 500,000 patients; majority of which
have been provided voluntarily or provided subsidized care.

Inaugurated on 28th July, 2003 with 120/55 beds. OPD started with free treatment to 90% patients. When OPD started, some of the construction work was still incomplete but they made the hospital functional anyway because of the dire need that the local community had. Another issue, which caught their attention, was the induction of qualified staff members. As it was in rural area, there was little chance that specialist doctors would come to serve in Narowal. On the other hand a big hospital cannot function without constant income.
